Some of Scotland’s greatest distilleries have to pass through decades of virtual anonymity before they receive their chance to shine. At one point this distillery was owned by Teacher’s, who required full-bodied, slightly peaty Highland malt for their famously bold blends (long associated with neighbouring distillery Ardmore), but they passed it on in the 70s as part of a long saga of the distillery changing hands from one blender to another. It was finally closed down in 1996 and remained dormant for five years. But in 2008, Glendronach finally received the opportunity it needed to become the cult favourite it is today.
