For many, Lagavulin is the pinnacle of the Islay style: the characteristic south-coast-of-Islay peat reek is supplemented by a gorgeous richness and depth of flavour from the use of sherry casks - the only distillery on the island that makes such dried fruit and dark chocolate flavours a core part of its flavour profile. What is more, the standard expression (and until relatively recently, the only generally available one) is bottled at a very respectable sixteen years: considerably older, more refined and complex than the baseline products of its competitors. This all combines to bring Lagavulin to the very top of many whisky fans’ lists of favourites: maybe not the peatiest Islay whisky, or the most obscure, or the cheapest or the rarest…but certainly the most elegant and possibly the best.
