Glenlivet may not be the oldest distillery in Scotland, but it does have the distinction of being one of the first legal ones, having applied for a licence as soon as the Excise Act came into force in 1824. This made it the only legal distillery in an area awash with unlicensed stills, a fact which made owner George Smith a target for much hatred and suspicion on the part of his neighbours, concerned about the implications for their own businesses. Perhaps rightfully so, as just ten years later all illegal competition had been shut down.
Now the biggest-selling single malt in the USA, and challenged worldwide only by Glenfiddich, Glenlivet’s place at the forefront of whisky history is secure. Its light and sweet style has helped it no end to hold its own against the many other single malt brands that have appeared since its pioneering early days.
