Balblair’s location, just up the road from Glenmorangie, had long been known as the ‘parish of the peats’ for its abundant peat sources - little wonder it had been the site of illicit distilling long before Balblair’s ‘official’ 1790 founding date. Despite being relocated and rebuilt in its entirety a century later, the distillery still uses the original water source, which provides a gentle peaty flavour to complement its rich spices, gentle soft fruits and grassy freshness. The distillery’s recent production has eschewed age statements for ‘vintages’, resulting in a few cult favourites and collectable bottlings.
