Tomatin was at one point the largest malt whisky distillery in Scotland, in terms of its production output, at 12 million litres per year. Despite this, it remained fairly underground for a long time due to the vast majority of its whisky going to blending sources: it is the main malt in the Antiquary and Talisman blends. When it closed in 1985, the distillery was rescued from an uncertain future by being taking over by a Japanese company, thereby becoming the first Scottish distillery owned by an Asian company: today, a great many distilleries are in Asian hands, whether Japanese, Thai or Philippine.
